Young Adult Counseling

Your 20’s: A time of exploration and freedom…

It’s a big world, and there are so many possibilities in front of you.

Maybe you’re a student, learning and expanding your view of the world while transitioning into adulthood.

Maybe you’re balancing the new freedoms that come with being an adult while also figuring out how to keep up with all the responsibility.

Maybe you’re learning through your work experience what it is you value most as you grow.

This time can be good and also really confusing and uncertain.

There is a mix of feelings and experiences we encounter during these formative years.

It’s a time when so much feels important – what’s happening globally and internally.

How do you show up in the world?

These years can be marked by the pain of figuring out who you are, what your relationships mean, and what you will contribute through your life path.

Many can feel lost or overwhelmed by choices during the young adult years – pressured to decide what is right for them when there is so much unknown.

Many young adults struggle to feel understood by their peers, their families, teachers, and bosses.

Many experience fears around expressing their authentic self because people in their life disapprove.

You don’t have to have it all figured out, and you don’t have to get it right the first time. It’s essential to allow yourself to experience life without outside pressures, which is hard to balance with all the information we have at our fingertips.

Diane* was having an identity crisis when she came to see me…

She was in her 20’s and had big dreams, but she was caught in the in-between with relationships, career, and independence.

Just as her career was stabilizing, her mom was diagnosed with cancer. How could she cope when her mom was fighting for her life? What if she dies?

She felt swept up in a whirlwind, which quickly turned into a scary tornado. She panicked as she contemplated what could fly into the vortex next.

Another broken relationship?

Another failed test?

Another sudden loss?

The storm swirling around in her mind and heart was coming too fast and heavy to navigate alone. She was on the brink of collapse and just wanted to hide from the intensity around her. On the inside, she was struggling with fear, anger, sadness, and loss of control. On the outside, her façade was crumbling.

She needed help.

With stress piled as high as her textbooks, she decided that enough was enough. She decided to lay it all out… and to let it all go…

… the endless compulsions to get everything perfect and play it cool.

… the voice of her inner critic telling her she would fail.

… the relationship that made her feel small and alone.

In the session, we dug deep into the root of her fears. We processed through writing and symbols, exploring where the pain began and what purpose it served. Diane saw her pain as an opportunity to make a new choice – identifying possibilities and the meaning of making a particular choice. With patience and curiosity, one after another, her fears transformed for healing.

Using support and tools to rewrite her narrative, Diane’s identity emerged with strength and courage. From small and scared, to embodied and purposed – a story she was proud to have.

Breaking out of the need for others to understand her, she knows herself – values, strengths, and goals.
